Narrative:
Cleared to taxi from parking for takeoff on runway 35. During taxi, I observed an aircraft at arrival end of runway, apparently doing pre-departure engine run-ups. I think I remember tower apparently clearing preceding aircraft for takeoff from observed position at end of runway. During taxi, I was performing pre-departure checks, including basic GPS programming. Upon reaching end of runway, I realized that since there was no hold short marking just short of the runway, that I must have passed the hold short. Tower confirmed this and pointed out the hold short line on the taxiway about 300 ft short of the departure line up end. This was my first use of runway 35 and I never saw the hold short markings, which were not where I expected them to be. Wig-wag lights might have been very beneficial as would notes on the airport diagram -- denoting a non-standard hold short. Non standard hold short could also be mentioned in ATIS when runway 35 is in use.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A C172 PLT CROSSES HOLD SHORT LINE THAT WAS 300 FT AWAY FROM RWY WITHOUT CLRNC.
Narrative: CLRED TO TAXI FROM PARKING FOR TKOF ON RWY 35. DURING TAXI, I OBSERVED AN ACFT AT ARR END OF RWY, APPARENTLY DOING PRE-DEP ENG RUN-UPS. I THINK I REMEMBER TWR APPARENTLY CLRING PRECEDING ACFT FOR TKOF FROM OBSERVED POS AT END OF RWY. DURING TAXI, I WAS PERFORMING PRE-DEP CHKS, INCLUDING BASIC GPS PROGRAMMING. UPON REACHING END OF RWY, I REALIZED THAT SINCE THERE WAS NO HOLD SHORT MARKING JUST SHORT OF THE RWY, THAT I MUST HAVE PASSED THE HOLD SHORT. TWR CONFIRMED THIS AND POINTED OUT THE HOLD SHORT LINE ON THE TXWY ABOUT 300 FT SHORT OF THE DEP LINE UP END. THIS WAS MY FIRST USE OF RWY 35 AND I NEVER SAW THE HOLD SHORT MARKINGS, WHICH WERE NOT WHERE I EXPECTED THEM TO BE. WIG-WAG LIGHTS MIGHT HAVE BEEN VERY BENEFICIAL AS WOULD NOTES ON THE ARPT DIAGRAM -- DENOTING A NON-STANDARD HOLD SHORT. NON STANDARD HOLD SHORT COULD ALSO BE MENTIONED IN ATIS WHEN RWY 35 IS IN USE.
