Narrative:
While on an IFR flight to gai, potomac approach cleared us direct to montgomery county airport and advised us to expect a visual approach. Approximately 4 NM northeast of the airport, the captain, who was the PF, acquired the field and requested the first officer to notify ATC. The first officer complied and potomac approach cleared us for a visual approach. Upon entering a left downwind for runway 14, the captain requested the first officer cancel IFR. ATC acknowledged cancellation and advised us to maintain assigned transponder code -- gai is located in the washington, dc ADIZ. The first officer, out of habit, automatically selected 1200. The first officer brought this to the captain's attention. The captain, preoccupied with a visual approach to an uncontrolled airport with other slower traffic in the pattern, did not process the first officer's input. Upon landing, the captain received a call from potomac approach.

Title: ALTHOUGH ADVISED BY PCT TO REMAIN ON THEIR DISCRETE CODE, FLT CREW OF C550 OPERATING TO GAI WITHIN THE DC ADIZ IMPROPERLY SELECTED 1200 ON XPONDER WHEN CANCELING IFR.
Narrative: WHILE ON AN IFR FLT TO GAI, POTOMAC APCH CLRED US DIRECT TO MONTGOMERY COUNTY ARPT AND ADVISED US TO EXPECT A VISUAL APCH. APPROX 4 NM NE OF THE ARPT, THE CAPT, WHO WAS THE PF, ACQUIRED THE FIELD AND REQUESTED THE FO TO NOTIFY ATC. THE FO COMPLIED AND POTOMAC APCH CLRED US FOR A VISUAL APCH. UPON ENTERING A L DOWNWIND FOR RWY 14, THE CAPT REQUESTED THE FO CANCEL IFR. ATC ACKNOWLEDGED CANCELLATION AND ADVISED US TO MAINTAIN ASSIGNED XPONDER CODE -- GAI IS LOCATED IN THE WASHINGTON, DC ADIZ. THE FO, OUT OF HABIT, AUTOMATICALLY SELECTED 1200. THE FO BROUGHT THIS TO THE CAPT'S ATTN. THE CAPT, PREOCCUPIED WITH A VISUAL APCH TO AN UNCTLED ARPT WITH OTHER SLOWER TFC IN THE PATTERN, DID NOT PROCESS THE FO'S INPUT. UPON LNDG, THE CAPT RECEIVED A CALL FROM POTOMAC APCH.
