Narrative:

We were parked on gate. After the door was closed and the jetbridge pulled, we noticed that the tug operator did not have a headset. He and another guide person were standing on the captain's side of the airplane waiting for hand signals. I did not know prior to this that they would not have a headset, so I had not briefed them on hand signals. I gave them the standard brake release signal and the standard pushback signal which they acknowledged. Just after they began to push us back, we felt the airplane shake. It felt like the nosewheel was sliding. The tug operator was looking toward the back of the airplane. I looked back and saw a truck up against the wingtip with obvious damage. I called the flight attendant to see if everyone was okay. She said everyone was fine, but later she told us that she had hit her head and had a headache. Apparently a garbage truck had backed into our wingtip after servicing a dumpster parked next to the airplane.
