Narrative:
During pushback; the tug driver made a violent hard stop. When asked what happened; he said a catering truck had pulled in behind us. The first officer looked out his side window and saw the catering truck right up against our right wing between the engine and wingtip. From his view; it appeared that only a foot or two separated us from a collision. After several moments; the truck backed up and pulled over to the aircraft at the gate. We saw the wing walker go over to the 2 catering individuals and discuss the matter. The jovial laughing manner displayed by the driver of catering truck indicated he was unconcerned with this issue. I asked the tug driver if he was going to elevate this matter. He said he would.
