Narrative:
A contractually legal reserve assignment was received. This identify started out with a departure to iad with an approximately 12 hour layover, which amounted to 9 hours if you subtract the time it takes to get to the hotel and the time needed to return to the airport. Arriving at the hotel, we are supposed to get 8 hours of uninterrupted rest, however, with the noise in the middle of the day along with the fact that you're asking your body to do the impossible, I along with the first officer was only able to take a short nap. The result of this was that, by the time we arrived in sfo, we both had been awake 24 hours. We both felt extremely fatigued throughout the flight and this was with a non-eventful flight with excellent WX. We both felt concern with what our level of proficiency would be if the flight was not so uneventful. Certainly we had no control over fatigue management!
