Narrative:

Local private pilot based at T66. First trip to washington, dc area (vkx) friendly, md. Checked with bridgeport WX briefer regarding security status of nyc to enable sightseeing along hudson corridor given proximity to ground zero. Told that the state of alert did not conflict with a turn along the hudson. Never thought to ask regarding dc area given clear status of nyc. Didn't file given a pristine day. Flew CT66 to vkx. Never heard of ADIZ around dc. Stayed out of class B, but broke into ADIZ unwittingly. Checked airport facility directory regarding vkx, no mention of security requirements. Transponder squawk 1200. Called 122.8 to regarding vkx local traffic announce setting up on 45 degrees to runway 24. No return information. All appeared usual until on downwind leg, the customs police helicopter showed up, landed with me and explained the rules. It seemed to me, being from new england, that if nyc was clear to fly within 1000 ft of ground zero, why not dc as long as I was out of class B. I would have picked up the change in status if it was published in the airport facility directory. I also checked multiple AWOS/ATIS prior to landing to be sure of wind speed, etc. It might help if the ADIZ requirement is mentioned as a NOTAM on the recordings. I would have radioed lessburg FSS. Listing it as 'radio aids to navigation' didn't get my attention since I have a GPS and could see over 50 mi. Ie, I wasn't looking for WX or navigation help and was flying into a small local field outside of (below) class B airspace.
