Narrative:
A voluntary search mission was being flown off the west coast of ft myers in search of missing boaters. I was told by the mission coordinators that a DVFR flight plan was on file. I picked up ft myers departure and was given a squawk code after advising the controller of my intentions and destination. The controller advised he would call FSS. Later in the flight, the same controller established radio contact with me and advised me to call FSS. Upon further inquiry, I found that no DVFR flight plan was filed. I air-filed and activated the flight plan. The flight continued without incident and the flight plan was closed after landing. In the future, I will personally speak, verify and reverify that the appropriate flight plan is in order without taking anything for granted.
