Narrative:
Location: lga, coney climb out. In reference to lga airport page warning magnetic deviations may occur on northwest end of runway 13, we had a heading light appear on takeoff followed by flight director display and raw data VOR information blanking from the display. We turned as directed on the departure but did not have a reliable VOR display or raw data needle to intercept the radial. The display came back erratically and we were able to follow the guidance in between blanking out. Approximately 10 mi after departure, all indications returned to normal, as they had been on the inbound flight and remainder of the flight. I suspect an electronic device in the cabin or an effect from the runway 13 magnetic deviation to cause the instrument blanking.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A DEP MD80 EXPERIENCES COMPASS AND HSI PROBS WITH BOTH COMPASSES AND RAW DATA ON HIS VOR INFO BECAUSE OF MAGNETIC INTERFERENCE NEAR RWY 13 AT LGA, NY.
Narrative: LOCATION: LGA, CONEY CLBOUT. IN REF TO LGA ARPT PAGE WARNING MAGNETIC DEVS MAY OCCUR ON NW END OF RWY 13, WE HAD A HDG LIGHT APPEAR ON TKOF FOLLOWED BY FLT DIRECTOR DISPLAY AND RAW DATA VOR INFO BLANKING FROM THE DISPLAY. WE TURNED AS DIRECTED ON THE DEP BUT DID NOT HAVE A RELIABLE VOR DISPLAY OR RAW DATA NEEDLE TO INTERCEPT THE RADIAL. THE DISPLAY CAME BACK ERRATICALLY AND WE WERE ABLE TO FOLLOW THE GUIDANCE IN BTWN BLANKING OUT. APPROX 10 MI AFTER DEP, ALL INDICATIONS RETURNED TO NORMAL, AS THEY HAD BEEN ON THE INBOUND FLT AND REMAINDER OF THE FLT. I SUSPECT AN ELECTRONIC DEVICE IN THE CABIN OR AN EFFECT FROM THE RWY 13 MAGNETIC DEV TO CAUSE THE INST BLANKING.
