Narrative:
Aircraft came from hangar. Maintenance showed an oil seal had been replaced on the #1 engine. All operations normal until shortly after takeoff. On climb out an overheated oil odor was noticed in the cockpit. The pack temperatures were normal. Flight attendant called with the same odor comment and added that the smoke alarm was on in the lavatory at door 2L. Then another call from another flight attendant sitting that there was some smoke visible illuminated by the reading lights and smoke alarm was on in aft lavatory. First officer was flying. I declared an emergency and requested return to sfo. We were at about 12000 ft when we began the return to sfo. I reviewed the qrc checklist for smoke/odor, and air condition, smoke checklist. Continued contact with flight attendants on cabin condition with smoke. They said smoke was dissipating as we were descending back to airport, vectors for visual approach runway 28L sfo. Turned off right pack on base leg, recirculation fan, left pack on ground. Normal landing. Flight attendants said cabin was ok. Taxied to gate, normal deplaning at jetway. No injuries. Fire department came onboard to inspect aircraft.
