Narrative:
Merida center called us air carrier Y and told us to descend immediately to FL350 from FL370. After a second call to air carrier Y, we asked if he meant air carrier X. He said yes, and asked us to immediately descend to FL350 from FL370 and turn left 30 degrees. We then noticed an opposite direction aircraft at our altitude closing on us. We never got a TA or RA and never got within about 10 mi of the traffic.
