Narrative:

After I departed gai and changed squawk in the air, while contacting potomac departure, to my proper ADIZ code. Due to the busy conditions on the airport, I paid more attention to ground safety than squawk codes until in the air. Although I was still at pattern altitude and in the pattern when I called potomac, I was informed that I violated ADIZ procedure. I've always learned the 5 T's: tune and talk are the last 2 of importance. Safety was first on my mind -- versus turns.
