Narrative:
Ram air temperature probe was placarded inoperative. However, the ram air temperature indicator was indicated inoperative on the placard simply requiring we have ram air temperature reading from the pms. A closer reading of the logbook would probably made it apparent that the ramp air temperature probe heat was inoperative and the ram air temperature indicator was fine. MEL requirement for the probe heat requires us to stay out of icing conditions. By default we remained VFR up to ZZZ1 where the logbook was corrected.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN MD80 WAS DISPATCHED IN NON COMPLIANCE WITH THE RAM AIR TEMP SYS DEFERRED AS INOP PER THE MEL. RAM AIR TEMP PROBE HEATER WAS ACTUAL PROB.
Narrative: RAM AIR TEMP PROBE WAS PLACARDED INOP. HOWEVER, THE RAM AIR TEMP INDICATOR WAS INDICATED INOP ON THE PLACARD SIMPLY REQUIRING WE HAVE RAM AIR TEMP READING FROM THE PMS. A CLOSER READING OF THE LOGBOOK WOULD PROBABLY MADE IT APPARENT THAT THE RAMP AIR TEMP PROBE HEAT WAS INOP AND THE RAM AIR TEMP INDICATOR WAS FINE. MEL REQUIREMENT FOR THE PROBE HEAT REQUIRES US TO STAY OUT OF ICING CONDITIONS. BY DEFAULT WE REMAINED VFR UP TO ZZZ1 WHERE THE LOGBOOK WAS CORRECTED.
