Narrative:

Just before being vectored for an ILS, approach control told us he showed us at 1500 ft MSL and we were cleared only to 2000 ft MSL. We realized that we had both forgotten to set our altimeters from standard to qnh. The altimeter setting at the time was 0994 hpa (hectopascals), the discrepancy was almost 500 ft. We never finished our approach checklist because the altimeter is the last item on the list. This checklist is accomplished when departing 18000 ft. This coincides with 2992 (standard) in the USA, which is not used in europe.
