Narrative:
Struck an unknown number of birds at rotation on runway 10R pdx. Severe vibration and hot smell. EICAS showed left engine vibration. Captain pulled left engine thrust back and elected to return. I declared emergency and shut down left engine with checklist procedure. Uneventful landing. Significant damage to left engine. Tower reported numerous dead ducks on departure end of runway. I felt rushed in making a quick return to airport. I believe all checklist items were accomplished, though somewhat abbreviated. Tower requested souls and fuel. I was too busy at the time and responded 'stand by.' I never did give information to tower. I felt we could have communicated a little better as a crew. I was not sure initially if the captain wanted to shut down engine or allow it to idle during return.
