Narrative:

On this sunday, decided to do a pleasure flight, after a number of cloudy weeks. On initial check-in with clearance, was informed the field was IFR, although it looked pretty clear, just a few clouds. Returned to hangar and cleaned the airplane. 20 mins later, the field was VFR. Received clearance to taxi to runway 21L via taxiway east and hold short. I confirmed hold short of runway 21L. I then taxied. There was a plane sitting on taxiway east at runway 21L to one side of the taxiway, doing a run-up. I wanted to make certain that I stayed well clear and moved to the right of taxiway east. I still remember looking at the runway identify sign (runway 34/2L). For some reason I did not see or 'register' runway 21L -- the sign is very clear. I did look to the right before I crossed runway 21L to make certain a plane was not on final. As I continued to taxi and was just about ready to call tower, ground informed me that I had failed to hold short of runway 21L, I was approaching runway 21R. Why runway 21L did not register I do not know. I had a friend in the right seat, not a pilot, who was flying with me for the first time. My wife, who usually sits right seat, was in back. She usually xchks me on readbacks and she also helps handle setting transponder codes and GPS settings. Tower did clear me to take off on runway 21R. I had to situation on the taxiway for a few mins to get my composure since busting the runway really shook me up. Possible contributing factor is being in a hurry to fly after weeks of not being able to and informing my friend what we were doing each step of the way. Another factor is relying too much on my partner to remind me of instructions. I need to focus on complying with the instructions with my partner as a true backup. I am revising my checklist to include a taxi checklist which will have reminders such as: txwys -- which one(south), runway -- cleared to cross? I read the safety/accident reports and have not understood how someone can cross an active runway. I am very embarrassed that I am one of those 'unsafe' pilots. I am modifying my checklists and my cockpit organization to not have this occur again. Coming back after flying, I insisted on a sterile cockpit once I contacted approach and began setting up for landing. I will have a sterile cockpit beginning with taxi and takeoff.

Title: C182 PLT HAD A RWY INCURSION AT PSC.

Narrative: ON THIS SUNDAY, DECIDED TO DO A PLEASURE FLT, AFTER A NUMBER OF CLOUDY WKS. ON INITIAL CHK-IN WITH CLRNC, WAS INFORMED THE FIELD WAS IFR, ALTHOUGH IT LOOKED PRETTY CLR, JUST A FEW CLOUDS. RETURNED TO HANGAR AND CLEANED THE AIRPLANE. 20 MINS LATER, THE FIELD WAS VFR. RECEIVED CLRNC TO TAXI TO RWY 21L VIA TXWY E AND HOLD SHORT. I CONFIRMED HOLD SHORT OF RWY 21L. I THEN TAXIED. THERE WAS A PLANE SITTING ON TXWY E AT RWY 21L TO ONE SIDE OF THE TXWY, DOING A RUN-UP. I WANTED TO MAKE CERTAIN THAT I STAYED WELL CLR AND MOVED TO THE R OF TXWY E. I STILL REMEMBER LOOKING AT THE RWY IDENT SIGN (RWY 34/2L). FOR SOME REASON I DID NOT SEE OR 'REGISTER' RWY 21L -- THE SIGN IS VERY CLR. I DID LOOK TO THE R BEFORE I CROSSED RWY 21L TO MAKE CERTAIN A PLANE WAS NOT ON FINAL. AS I CONTINUED TO TAXI AND WAS JUST ABOUT READY TO CALL TWR, GND INFORMED ME THAT I HAD FAILED TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 21L, I WAS APCHING RWY 21R. WHY RWY 21L DID NOT REGISTER I DO NOT KNOW. I HAD A FRIEND IN THE R SEAT, NOT A PLT, WHO WAS FLYING WITH ME FOR THE FIRST TIME. MY WIFE, WHO USUALLY SITS R SEAT, WAS IN BACK. SHE USUALLY XCHKS ME ON READBACKS AND SHE ALSO HELPS HANDLE SETTING XPONDER CODES AND GPS SETTINGS. TWR DID CLR ME TO TAKE OFF ON RWY 21R. I HAD TO SIT ON THE TXWY FOR A FEW MINS TO GET MY COMPOSURE SINCE BUSTING THE RWY REALLY SHOOK ME UP. POSSIBLE CONTRIBUTING FACTOR IS BEING IN A HURRY TO FLY AFTER WKS OF NOT BEING ABLE TO AND INFORMING MY FRIEND WHAT WE WERE DOING EACH STEP OF THE WAY. ANOTHER FACTOR IS RELYING TOO MUCH ON MY PARTNER TO REMIND ME OF INSTRUCTIONS. I NEED TO FOCUS ON COMPLYING WITH THE INSTRUCTIONS WITH MY PARTNER AS A TRUE BACKUP. I AM REVISING MY CHKLIST TO INCLUDE A TAXI CHKLIST WHICH WILL HAVE REMINDERS SUCH AS: TXWYS -- WHICH ONE(S), RWY -- CLRED TO CROSS? I READ THE SAFETY/ACCIDENT RPTS AND HAVE NOT UNDERSTOOD HOW SOMEONE CAN CROSS AN ACTIVE RWY. I AM VERY EMBARRASSED THAT I AM ONE OF THOSE 'UNSAFE' PLTS. I AM MODIFYING MY CHKLISTS AND MY COCKPIT ORGANIZATION TO NOT HAVE THIS OCCUR AGAIN. COMING BACK AFTER FLYING, I INSISTED ON A STERILE COCKPIT ONCE I CONTACTED APCH AND BEGAN SETTING UP FOR LNDG. I WILL HAVE A STERILE COCKPIT BEGINNING WITH TAXI AND TKOF.
