Narrative:
On the night in question, I was assigned to do 4 items of work on the MD88 aircraft. I worked these items in the following order: 1) lube of all landing gear, lube doors and thrust reversers. 2) inspect and lube the horizontal stabilizer jack screw. 3) replacing the water separator bags. 4) service nose landing gear strut. I'd rather keep this statement simple, so I'll be brief. I was doing the above items on my first night outside after working solely in the cabin for approximately 2 yrs previous. I was using a device that I was not trained on. I was given 5 mins of instruction by 2 peers. I svced the nose landing gear exactly as they said. Our aircraft maintenance manual does not list any reference to this strut service device. I only did the best I could with due diligence to training and certification.

Title: AN MD88 RETURNED TO THE FIELD DUE TO INCORRECT SVCING OF THE NOSE LNDG GEAR BY AN UNQUALIFIED AND UNTRAINED TECHNICIAN.
Narrative: ON THE NIGHT IN QUESTION, I WAS ASSIGNED TO DO 4 ITEMS OF WORK ON THE MD88 ACFT. I WORKED THESE ITEMS IN THE FOLLOWING ORDER: 1) LUBE OF ALL LNDG GEAR, LUBE DOORS AND THRUST REVERSERS. 2) INSPECT AND LUBE THE HORIZ STABILIZER JACK SCREW. 3) REPLACING THE WATER SEPARATOR BAGS. 4) SVC NOSE LNDG GEAR STRUT. I'D RATHER KEEP THIS STATEMENT SIMPLE, SO I'LL BE BRIEF. I WAS DOING THE ABOVE ITEMS ON MY FIRST NIGHT OUTSIDE AFTER WORKING SOLELY IN THE CABIN FOR APPROX 2 YRS PREVIOUS. I WAS USING A DEVICE THAT I WAS NOT TRAINED ON. I WAS GIVEN 5 MINS OF INSTRUCTION BY 2 PEERS. I SVCED THE NOSE LNDG GEAR EXACTLY AS THEY SAID. OUR ACFT MAINT MANUAL DOES NOT LIST ANY REF TO THIS STRUT SVC DEVICE. I ONLY DID THE BEST I COULD WITH DUE DILIGENCE TO TRAINING AND CERTIFICATION.
