Narrative:
Upon initial call to cle approach control, we were told to expect ILS runway 6L, which we could accept, and programmed into FMC. Switched frequencys to a different controller. After several vectors, controller instructed us to 'intercept the localizer, cleared for the approach.' he did not state intended runway. We asked for which runway we were cleared for. He stated 'runway 6R.' had we not questioned him, we would have made an approach to a different runway than he intended. There was other traffic ahead of us to runway 6L. I believe the controller should have stated which runway we were to approach when initially cleared. Fortunately, controllers/pilots doublechk each other.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ON INITIAL CALL TO CLE APCH, A B737 CREW WAS ADVISED TO EXPECT RWY 6L. AFTER BEING 'CLRED FOR APCH' BY THE FINAL CTLR, CREW ASKED WHICH RWY AND WERE TOLD RWY 6R.
Narrative: UPON INITIAL CALL TO CLE APCH CTL, WE WERE TOLD TO EXPECT ILS RWY 6L, WHICH WE COULD ACCEPT, AND PROGRAMMED INTO FMC. SWITCHED FREQS TO A DIFFERENT CTLR. AFTER SEVERAL VECTORS, CTLR INSTRUCTED US TO 'INTERCEPT THE LOC, CLRED FOR THE APCH.' HE DID NOT STATE INTENDED RWY. WE ASKED FOR WHICH RWY WE WERE CLRED FOR. HE STATED 'RWY 6R.' HAD WE NOT QUESTIONED HIM, WE WOULD HAVE MADE AN APCH TO A DIFFERENT RWY THAN HE INTENDED. THERE WAS OTHER TFC AHEAD OF US TO RWY 6L. I BELIEVE THE CTLR SHOULD HAVE STATED WHICH RWY WE WERE TO APCH WHEN INITIALLY CLRED. FORTUNATELY, CTLRS/PLTS DOUBLECHK EACH OTHER.
