Narrative:
I was replacing a cockpit overhead fuel xfeed and fuel boost pump panel. I had a stock clerk enter the part number (manufacturer's) of the removed part into our computer parts program, and the company part number that it gave as xref was installed, but the installed part was not effective for this particular aircraft. This error could have been avoided had I checked the illustrated parts catalog manual to ensure correct part/aircraft effectivity. After pushback, the flight crew noticed EICAS message 'forward fuel xfeed' displayed. Flight returned to gate. Ultimately installing the correct panel cleared the message, but problem was deferred leaving ZZZ, then fixed at the next station.
