Narrative:
After departing runway 33 at detroit city airport to remain in the pattern, I was told to follow another aircraft in the pattern. I did not see the other aircraft, but continued to fly a regular pattern. Upon turning downwind I still could not see the other aircraft. After reaching the point on downwind, abeam the numbers, and while I was preparing to turn base, the other aircraft flew under my aircraft from left to right. I later learned that a student pilot and his instructor were flying the other aircraft and they were flying a wide pattern with a long crosswind and base.
