Narrative:
In departure climb through FL190, master caution panel 'electric' light and master caution light illuminated. Observed #1 generator drive oil temperature gauge pegged full scale in yellow band. Captain (PNF) ran 7-54 irregular checklist for generator drive low oil pressure or high oil temperature. After disconnecting #1 generator CSD (constant speed drive), residual volts showed 8 and CSD oil temperature remained pegged. Repeated disconnect per irregular checklist note. Residual volts still showed 8 and CSD oil temperature pegged. Attempted ACARS 'call me.' poor connection with dispatch and maintenance controller did not allow coordination. Declared emergency with center and requested return to ZZZ1. Briefed purser for cabin advisory. Briefed passenger by PA. Concluded coordination with dispatch and maintenance controller as best possible by ACARS text messages. Retarded #1 engine throttle to idle. Monitored #1 engine parameters. Briefed and flew single engine approach and land to visual by first officer. Shut down #1 engine clearing runway. Taxied to gate and deplaned. Made logbook entry.
