Narrative:
Cruise flight, the right IRS fault light illuminated. QRH completed, fault light still illuminated. VFR landing uneventful. Called maintenance control. Had filled in most of the blocks of the discrepancy section, ie, pdis, tail number, station, flight number, employee number, but not the actual discrepancy verbiage. Maintenance control wanted troubleshooting help. I turned the IRS's off, pulled the 3 adiru circuit breakers, realigned the IRS's, no fault lights, everything normal. So I lined out all the entries, initialed all but didn't feel comfortable with the situation, ie, not completing the write-up. Maintenance duty control looked at the history and noticed similar write-up the week before and decided a write-up was in order so I went to the next page and did a complete write-up. Maintenance from lax was supposedly sent with a new adiru. I suppose the FAA will nit pick either logbook page, especially the first one being lined out and the reasons why the first was lined out. Second is, how far do we go to help maintenance, and what can we do as pilots that is not considered mechanic only actions, considering how pwring down fixes many electronic problems?

Title: CAPT OF B737-700 QUESTIONS WHETHER MAINT ACTION AND DOCUMENTATION HE ENCOUNTERED AT A NON MAINT STATION WAS APPROPRIATE. ALSO CONCERNED THAT HE, A NON QUALIFIED INDIVIDUAL, WAS PERFORMING MAINT PROCS VIA TELEPHONE DIRECTION.
Narrative: CRUISE FLT, THE R IRS FAULT LIGHT ILLUMINATED. QRH COMPLETED, FAULT LIGHT STILL ILLUMINATED. VFR LNDG UNEVENTFUL. CALLED MAINT CTL. HAD FILLED IN MOST OF THE BLOCKS OF THE DISCREPANCY SECTION, IE, PDIS, TAIL NUMBER, STATION, FLT NUMBER, EMPLOYEE NUMBER, BUT NOT THE ACTUAL DISCREPANCY VERBIAGE. MAINT CTL WANTED TROUBLESHOOTING HELP. I TURNED THE IRS'S OFF, PULLED THE 3 ADIRU CIRCUIT BREAKERS, REALIGNED THE IRS'S, NO FAULT LIGHTS, EVERYTHING NORMAL. SO I LINED OUT ALL THE ENTRIES, INITIALED ALL BUT DIDN'T FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH THE SIT, IE, NOT COMPLETING THE WRITE-UP. MAINT FROM LAX WAS SUPPOSEDLY SENT WITH A NEW ADIRU. I SUPPOSE THE FAA WILL NIT PICK EITHER LOGBOOK PAGE, ESPECIALLY THE FIRST ONE BEING LINED OUT AND THE REASONS WHY THE FIRST WAS LINED OUT. SECOND IS, HOW FAR DO WE GO TO HELP MAINT, AND WHAT CAN WE DO AS PLTS THAT IS NOT CONSIDERED MECH ONLY ACTIONS, CONSIDERING HOW PWRING DOWN FIXES MANY ELECTRONIC PROBS?
