Narrative:
We were to depart using runway 25L. We were instructed to taxi from ramp along taxiway K, down runway 13 and hold short of runway 25L. While holding short near taxiway M, ground informed us that we had passed the hold short line. I personally did not notice the depiction of the hold short line on the chart because it is depicted only in the inset portion and is not included on the larger full view. It is also a very unusual practice to have a hold short line for one runway painted across and perpendicular to another. This practice is very misleading and makes it easy to confuse the hold short for some type of other runway marking which would normally be seen at the same position. This is the first time I can recall ever seeing a hold short line used this way. Aircraft on approach was not instructed to go around since we were still well clear of runway 25L. Supplemental information from acn 632104: I could not find a hold short line so I stopped the aircraft halfway on runway 13 and taxiway north. The tower controller told us for future reference the hold short line for runway 25L was behind us on runway 13.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A CL65 CREW CROSSES THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 25L AT MKE WHICH IS LOCATED ON RWY 13. AN ACFT ON FINAL FOR RWY 25 WAS NOT ISSUED A GAR.
Narrative: WE WERE TO DEPART USING RWY 25L. WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO TAXI FROM RAMP ALONG TXWY K, DOWN RWY 13 AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 25L. WHILE HOLDING SHORT NEAR TXWY M, GND INFORMED US THAT WE HAD PASSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE. I PERSONALLY DID NOT NOTICE THE DEPICTION OF THE HOLD SHORT LINE ON THE CHART BECAUSE IT IS DEPICTED ONLY IN THE INSET PORTION AND IS NOT INCLUDED ON THE LARGER FULL VIEW. IT IS ALSO A VERY UNUSUAL PRACTICE TO HAVE A HOLD SHORT LINE FOR ONE RWY PAINTED ACROSS AND PERPENDICULAR TO ANOTHER. THIS PRACTICE IS VERY MISLEADING AND MAKES IT EASY TO CONFUSE THE HOLD SHORT FOR SOME TYPE OF OTHER RWY MARKING WHICH WOULD NORMALLY BE SEEN AT THE SAME POS. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I CAN RECALL EVER SEEING A HOLD SHORT LINE USED THIS WAY. ACFT ON APCH WAS NOT INSTRUCTED TO GO AROUND SINCE WE WERE STILL WELL CLR OF RWY 25L. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 632104: I COULD NOT FIND A HOLD SHORT LINE SO I STOPPED THE ACFT HALFWAY ON RWY 13 AND TXWY N. THE TWR CTLR TOLD US FOR FUTURE REF THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 25L WAS BEHIND US ON RWY 13.
