Narrative:
While on an IFR flight plan and in contact with potomac approach, I was flying direct to jyo (leesburg, va) to expect a visual approach. Due to haze, we did not sight the airport until 3 mi southwest. I instructed my copilot to call the field in sight and began to join the downwind for runway 35. Potomac replied to cancel the IFR with him or on the ground with leesburg radio. Without asking my preference, my copilot canceled the IFR with potomac and switched to CTAF. We had an uneventful approach and landing. Upon entering the FBO, I had a message to contact potomac TRACON. The gentleman asked me why we squawked 1200 and did not remain on our assigned code. I then asked my copilot if he changed it to 1200. He said that he did if after he was told to switch to CTAF. I then asked him if he was told to switch to 1200, which he replied no. He just did it out of habit. The gentleman from TRACON took my personal information and suggested that we get a briefing on the ADIZ procedures from FSS. My copilot and I then walked into the leesburg AFSS and met with the dca AFSS operations supervisor who gave us a very thorough briefing on the ADIZ procedures and that a discrete code must be squawked at all times and that the 1200 code does not exist in the ADIZ.

Title: FLT CREW OF BE40 ON ARR TO JYO WITHIN THE DCADIZ IMPROPERLY SQUAWK 1200 WHEN IFR IS CANCELED. RECEIVE APPROPRIATE BRIEFING FROM FSS SUPVR AFTER LEARNING OF THEIR ERROR.
