Narrative:
I was the first officer on flight 123 departing ZZZ1 shortly after XA00 local time headed for ZZZ2. Climbing through FL300 over abc, we received an ECAM message '#2 compressor vane.' this was followed by ECAM message 'avoid thrust changes, if engine stall, engine master 2 off.' egt on #2 engine was 585 degrees, engine #1 was 465 degrees. The captain was the PF. He lessened the rate of climb to avoid as much thrust change as possible. Approaching FL330, the egt started rising, the compressor stalled and the engine shut down. Per ECAM, the captain verified and took engine #2 master off and secured the engine. The captain flew the aircraft, declared an emergency and coordination with ATC to return and get a lower altitude. All company SOP's were exercised. I talked with the flight attendants and informed the passenger of the nature of the situation. I contacted soc and moc. Per soc deemed ZZZ1 as the most suitable airport. Discussed overweight landing and went to QRH for appropriate checklists. Landed in ZZZ1 approximately 30 mins later. Uneventful landing and taxi to the gate. Debriefed with moc and operations via conference call. Determined aircraft has prior history.
