Narrative:
I and the C337 were giving sight-seeing rides over salina, ks. It was briefed that the C337 would follow in trail. When we returned to the airport, I crossed over the airport from east to west in the DC8 to enter a right downwind for runway 17. As I started my right turn, the C337 had pulled up along my right side -- this unknown to me as it has not been briefed, about 100-150 ft at my 2:30 O'clock position. What a shock it was as I was about to turn into him. I instead broke left to avoid what looked to me to be a dangerous situation. I think ATC was a bit startled too, but probably thought we had planned it that way. He said, 'I guess you all are going to take responsibility for your own separation.' I did not reply, but I did put more separation between me and the C337. The C337 pilot thought he was doing something really cool, but my feeling is that you don't get that close to someone without talking it over first.
