Narrative:
On departure from sna on the CHANL1.sxc departure we were off course due to several factors. Both pilots were unfamiliar with the FMS. Dual 'Q' flight director guidance. One NAVAID on the departure OTS. After departure the FMS and flight director seemed to disagree. The flight director was asking for a left turn and the CDI needle swung right 80 degrees. After a call to manufacturer I was told that in the older FMS units the CDI needle defaulted to the first hard course and disregarded the headings. We followed the CDI and turned right. Thinking the dual 'Q' flight director (which was left of center) was asking for less bank angle. Departure control asked us to turn back and pick up the departure route and gave us vectors, because sxc VOR was OTS. The newer FMS do not operate this way neither does brand Y equipment.

Title: CL600 CREW HAD A TRACK DEV DEPARTING SNA ON THE CHANNEL ONE SID. THE CREW WAS UNFAMILIAR WITH THE FMC INSTALLED IN THE ACFT.
Narrative: ON DEP FROM SNA ON THE CHANL1.SXC DEP WE WERE OFF COURSE DUE TO SEVERAL FACTORS. BOTH PLTS WERE UNFAMILIAR WITH THE FMS. DUAL 'Q' FLT DIRECTOR GUIDANCE. ONE NAVAID ON THE DEP OTS. AFTER DEP THE FMS AND FLT DIRECTOR SEEMED TO DISAGREE. THE FLT DIRECTOR WAS ASKING FOR A L TURN AND THE CDI NEEDLE SWUNG R 80 DEGS. AFTER A CALL TO MANUFACTURER I WAS TOLD THAT IN THE OLDER FMS UNITS THE CDI NEEDLE DEFAULTED TO THE FIRST HARD COURSE AND DISREGARDED THE HDGS. WE FOLLOWED THE CDI AND TURNED R. THINKING THE DUAL 'Q' FLT DIRECTOR (WHICH WAS L OF CTR) WAS ASKING FOR LESS BANK ANGLE. DEP CTL ASKED US TO TURN BACK AND PICK UP THE DEP RTE AND GAVE US VECTORS, BECAUSE SXC VOR WAS OTS. THE NEWER FMS DO NOT OPERATE THIS WAY NEITHER DOES BRAND Y EQUIP.
