Narrative:
After pushback from gate, called ground for taxi. Ground instructed taxi runway 7L via taxiway D. Repeated back-taxi taxiway D to runway 7L. After crossing runway 7L, ATC called and said, 'where are you going?' he then instructed us to execute a 180 degree turn on taxiway D and taxi into position and hold on runway 7L at taxiway D. Clearance was to taxi runway 7L via taxiway D with no hold short restrs or intersection takeoff. Supplemental information from acn 636528: we turned left on taxiway D taxiing to the end of the runway which would have caused us to cross runways 1L&right, so we held short of landing traffic landing on both those runways. My confusion in this situation is in not receiving clear instructions to an intersection takeoff. Clrncs to a runway are to the end of the runway and not to some unannounced intersection. On the other hand, the threshold of runway 7 is some distance from the end with more than adequate takeoff distance remaining. Possibly the best way to avoid this misunderstanding is to have more explicit taxi instructions and a lighted hold short point.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: RWY INCURSION WHEN A TAXIING B757 CROSSES OVER THE ASSIGNED RWY 7L ON TXWY D BTWN THE DEP END AND THE DISPLACED THRESHOLD AT LAS.
Narrative: AFTER PUSHBACK FROM GATE, CALLED GND FOR TAXI. GND INSTRUCTED TAXI RWY 7L VIA TXWY D. REPEATED BACK-TAXI TXWY D TO RWY 7L. AFTER XING RWY 7L, ATC CALLED AND SAID, 'WHERE ARE YOU GOING?' HE THEN INSTRUCTED US TO EXECUTE A 180 DEG TURN ON TXWY D AND TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD ON RWY 7L AT TXWY D. CLRNC WAS TO TAXI RWY 7L VIA TXWY D WITH NO HOLD SHORT RESTRS OR INTXN TKOF. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 636528: WE TURNED L ON TXWY D TAXIING TO THE END OF THE RWY WHICH WOULD HAVE CAUSED US TO CROSS RWYS 1L&R, SO WE HELD SHORT OF LNDG TFC LNDG ON BOTH THOSE RWYS. MY CONFUSION IN THIS SIT IS IN NOT RECEIVING CLR INSTRUCTIONS TO AN INTXN TKOF. CLRNCS TO A RWY ARE TO THE END OF THE RWY AND NOT TO SOME UNANNOUNCED INTXN. ON THE OTHER HAND, THE THRESHOLD OF RWY 7 IS SOME DISTANCE FROM THE END WITH MORE THAN ADEQUATE TKOF DISTANCE REMAINING. POSSIBLY THE BEST WAY TO AVOID THIS MISUNDERSTANDING IS TO HAVE MORE EXPLICIT TAXI INSTRUCTIONS AND A LIGHTED HOLD SHORT POINT.
