Narrative:
I (PIC) was on the #2 radio talking to our operations (in-range call) and then was talking to the passenger about our ETA and WX, and the first officer knew this. I then told the first officer that I could take responsibility for the #1 radio. He informed me approach told him (when I was off the #1 radio) to descend from 8000 ft MSL to 5000 ft MSL. At 5300 ft, ATC asked us why we were descending. I stated we were going to 5000 ft. He then came back and said we were supposed to be at 7000 ft. We then started to climb back to 7000 ft. No TA or RA was present.
