Narrative:
While taxiing off runway 19R at iad, we were told to take the forward high speed and expedite. We sped up and exited the next forward high speed, but after clearing the runway we turned onto the adjacent reverse high speed taxiway. The tower controller yelled 'I told you to use the forward high speed, call the tower when you get in.' we called and he said they want people to exit as soon as possible so use the forward. He said it doesn't make as much difference on our small sized plane with the airliner who can't make the reverse without slowing down. We did exit on the forward as fast as we could, then slowed and turned onto the reverse which pointed us towards the FBO. Technically, I do not know if this is right or not. We did notice later that day the ATIS said, 'exit forward high speed when cleared for the reverse,' and my next stop I requested the reverse which was granted with a big 'thanks for asking.' in the future, a request such as I made will be standard procedure for me when there is any question about interpretation.
