Air Traffic Incident | Pilot Deviation |
Narrative:
The near midair collision incident occurred midfield downwind at 5500 ft MSL (tpa). I was flying 3 mi away from airport which is far enough from traffic pattern. I also flew opposite direction as active traffic pattern to set up 45 degree entry for downwind. The same time PA34-200T was flying downwind, but he was flying 3 mi away from airport with 6000 ft, which is 500 ft higher than tpa. Thus, both airplane's locations caused near midair collision incident. Fortunately, we didn't make an accident.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: NMAC OCCURS JUST OUTSIDE TPA AT PROVO WHEN A HIGH PERFORMANCE TWIN FLIES WIDE DOWNWIND IN WRONG SECTOR.
Narrative: THE NMAC INCIDENT OCCURRED MIDFIELD DOWNWIND AT 5500 FT MSL (TPA). I WAS FLYING 3 MI AWAY FROM ARPT WHICH IS FAR ENOUGH FROM TFC PATTERN. I ALSO FLEW OPPOSITE DIRECTION AS ACTIVE TFC PATTERN TO SET UP 45 DEG ENTRY FOR DOWNWIND. THE SAME TIME PA34-200T WAS FLYING DOWNWIND, BUT HE WAS FLYING 3 MI AWAY FROM ARPT WITH 6000 FT, WHICH IS 500 FT HIGHER THAN TPA. THUS, BOTH AIRPLANE'S LOCATIONS CAUSED NMAC INCIDENT. FORTUNATELY, WE DIDN'T MAKE AN ACCIDENT.
