Narrative:

We contacted psp tower and requested east departure to an area 5 mi east of the airport, liftoff to the north into the wind and then turn east. Tower cleared us as requested and we departed north along taxiway west to an altitude of about 50 ft and then turned east, across both runways. Tower told us to request permission to cross runways before doing so. We replied that we had requested east departure and were cleared for that. Tower said we were not going east and that east was along the runways, not crossing. This made no sense as the runway headings are both 310/130. See diagram.
