Narrative:

We departed ZZZ as planned. When retracting flaps from 1 degree to up, the right trailing edge flap indicator remained at 1 degree and the left indicator went to up position. We declared an emergency and ran the appropriate checklist. While discussing our options the indicator went to up position on its own. We returned to ZZZ1 and landed uneventfully. Maintenance changed the flap position indicator and operations checked ok.
