Narrative:
Shortly after takeoff; the #1 flight attendant called. She told me that she had thick; black smoke coming out of one oven. She had already turned the oven off. I could smell smoke. We called the cockpit and described the situation. Captain made the decision to return to ZZZ immediately and made a PA to that effect. We got the halon from emergency equipment in first class and kept it handy at #1 jumpseat. Flight landed without incident and was met by fire department and maintenance personnel. There were no flames and maintenance determined cause to be excess grease and dirt on exposed wires/elements in back of oven. This was an old air carrier Y aircraft and has different ovens from the air carrier X aircraft.

Title: CABIN ATTENDANT DISCOVERS THICK SMOKE EMANATING FROM FIRST CLASS GALLEY OVEN. FLT QUICKLY RETURNS TO DEP ARPT AND MET BY CFR AND MAINT PERSONNEL.
Narrative: SHORTLY AFTER TKOF; THE #1 FLT ATTENDANT CALLED. SHE TOLD ME THAT SHE HAD THICK; BLACK SMOKE COMING OUT OF ONE OVEN. SHE HAD ALREADY TURNED THE OVEN OFF. I COULD SMELL SMOKE. WE CALLED THE COCKPIT AND DESCRIBED THE SIT. CAPT MADE THE DECISION TO RETURN TO ZZZ IMMEDIATELY AND MADE A PA TO THAT EFFECT. WE GOT THE HALON FROM EMER EQUIP IN FIRST CLASS AND KEPT IT HANDY AT #1 JUMPSEAT. FLT LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT AND WAS MET BY FIRE DEPT AND MAINT PERSONNEL. THERE WERE NO FLAMES AND MAINT DETERMINED CAUSE TO BE EXCESS GREASE AND DIRT ON EXPOSED WIRES/ELEMENTS IN BACK OF OVEN. THIS WAS AN OLD ACR Y ACFT AND HAS DIFFERENT OVENS FROM THE ACR X ACFT.
