Narrative:

Our flight was departing ZZZ-ZZZ1. Taxied to assigned runway 12R for takeoff. It was the captain's leg to fly the aircraft. After takeoff and during the initial climb segment; approximately 600 ft AGL; the flight attendants called on the interphone and said that 'smoke was filling the cabin' and it was hard to breathe. At 1000 ft AGL the captain said 'you have the aircraft and radios; I'll handle the problem.' so I flew the aircraft and declared an emergency and stated that we wanted to return to ZZZ. We donned the oxygen masks and the captain coordination with the flight attendants the emergency; while I flew and asked for the crash trucks to roll. ZZZ departure was very busy but very helpful. He gave us vectors for runway 12R for landing. While on a base leg; the captain took back the aircraft to fly; called for descent and approach checks; and we landed on runway 12R without a mishap. After clearing the runway; the crash fire rescue equipment communicated with us that no fire or smoke was seen or detected. We had 2 trucks follow us to the gate.
