Narrative:
Aircraft following B737 into las. He was landing runway 19R. Traffic he was following was landing runway 19L. I changed the aircraft to tower then he widened his base to final turn just 1.5 mi (for wake). Nellis AFB was departing south. Aircraft #1 and the nellis departure were about 1 mi; no altitude; no visual; talking to other people. This happens all the time. Aircraft are asked to turn a 3 mi final with heading and altitude restrs also following bigger jets. Nellis departures right at our arrs. There is no way to control their landing. If nellis was an FAA facility; we would not make this a practice -- but no one in nellis says anything. Our management is aware of this; and 'takes' the call when a pilot/facility calls. This is not a safe way of doing air traffic.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: L30 CTLR EXPRESSED CONCERN REGARDING NELLIS AFB MIL CTLR'S PRACTICE OF ALLOWING DEP ACFT TO CONFLICT WITH ACFT ON FINAL TO LAS.
Narrative: ACFT FOLLOWING B737 INTO LAS. HE WAS LNDG RWY 19R. TFC HE WAS FOLLOWING WAS LNDG RWY 19L. I CHANGED THE ACFT TO TWR THEN HE WIDENED HIS BASE TO FINAL TURN JUST 1.5 MI (FOR WAKE). NELLIS AFB WAS DEPARTING S. ACFT #1 AND THE NELLIS DEP WERE ABOUT 1 MI; NO ALT; NO VISUAL; TALKING TO OTHER PEOPLE. THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME. ACFT ARE ASKED TO TURN A 3 MI FINAL WITH HDG AND ALT RESTRS ALSO FOLLOWING BIGGER JETS. NELLIS DEPS RIGHT AT OUR ARRS. THERE IS NO WAY TO CTL THEIR LNDG. IF NELLIS WAS AN FAA FACILITY; WE WOULD NOT MAKE THIS A PRACTICE -- BUT NO ONE IN NELLIS SAYS ANYTHING. OUR MGMNT IS AWARE OF THIS; AND 'TAKES' THE CALL WHEN A PLT/FACILITY CALLS. THIS IS NOT A SAFE WAY OF DOING AIR TFC.
