Narrative:
Taxi in on atl ramp 1 and on west centerline; aircraft spray deflector hit a 2 1/2 inch tall steel plate placed by atl airport operations. Ramp was notified and on postflt inspection; found damaged deflector. Inspected steel plate personally with PIC; air carrier maintenance and atl airport operations and found steel plate on centerline. (I personally feel this steel plate had no business being used on the ramp area at all due to its thickness and jagged edges.) callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: pilot reported that airport operations was called to the aircraft and stated the reporter's aircraft was the only aircraft to complain about the plate. The airport representative said 'maybe you weren't on centerline;' as if to say it was 'your problem.' the metal plate stood out high enough that the splash shield was shattered by the impact.

Title: AN MD80 NOSEWHEEL SPRAY DEFLECTOR WAS DAMAGED WHEN THE ACFT TAXIED OVER A STEEL PLATE IN ATL'S RAMP 1.
Narrative: TAXI IN ON ATL RAMP 1 AND ON W CTRLINE; ACFT SPRAY DEFLECTOR HIT A 2 1/2 INCH TALL STEEL PLATE PLACED BY ATL ARPT OPS. RAMP WAS NOTIFIED AND ON POSTFLT INSPECTION; FOUND DAMAGED DEFLECTOR. INSPECTED STEEL PLATE PERSONALLY WITH PIC; ACR MAINT AND ATL ARPT OPS AND FOUND STEEL PLATE ON CTRLINE. (I PERSONALLY FEEL THIS STEEL PLATE HAD NO BUSINESS BEING USED ON THE RAMP AREA AT ALL DUE TO ITS THICKNESS AND JAGGED EDGES.) CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: PLT RPTED THAT ARPT OPS WAS CALLED TO THE ACFT AND STATED THE RPTR'S ACFT WAS THE ONLY ACFT TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE PLATE. THE ARPT REPRESENTATIVE SAID 'MAYBE YOU WEREN'T ON CTRLINE;' AS IF TO SAY IT WAS 'YOUR PROB.' THE METAL PLATE STOOD OUT HIGH ENOUGH THAT THE SPLASH SHIELD WAS SHATTERED BY THE IMPACT.
