Narrative:

I was working a busy period of traffic descending aircraft in conflict with several other aircraft and spacing numerous aircraft for ord. The aircraft in question departed st louis; mo; for ord on SID. Aircraft failed to hand off automatically to ZAU. I became aware of the problem when radar associate called chicago with a handoff. Aircraft was on the boundary. Handoff was accepted when aircraft was several mi outside of my airspace. I called controller to ask if situation was a problem. I was told no issues resulted from the late handoff.
