Narrative:

Reference triss 2 RNAV departure out of dfw. The correct runway (17R) was loaded into FMC; along with the correct departure (triss 2). First waypoint (navye) and runway were confirmed with queue frequency. Upon reaching 1080 ft MSL aircraft was flown to a heading of 155 degrees towards navye. Captain selected VNAV instead of navigation on the digital flight control panel. First officer then hand flew the aircraft on course over navye and within maximum speed of 220 KTS. Captain realized mistaken VNAV selection near jgirl and selected navigation. ATC provided a 060 degree heading near corts without comment.
