Narrative:

Departing runway 8. After applying takeoff power; I reached with my right pinky finger to adjust the right propeller control to synchronize with left engine. I inadvertently reduced RPM enough to cause right propeller to surge; which then caused the aircraft to yaw right of centerline due to left engine producing more power. At that point; I made the decision to abort the takeoff. I then proceeded to high speed taxi down the remainder of runway 8 in order to depart runway 20 since the wind was less than 5 KTS out of the north. Takeoff was normal. After climbing through 6500 ft; left engine surged and lost all power. I then completed memory items; backed up with the proper checklist; returned to land on runway 26 with no further problem. Company maintenance determined left turbocharger failed so sudden with waste gate closed which caused all exhaust to be blocked and stopped engine immediately. FSS and numerous pilots questioned why I continued to depart after an aborted takeoff. However; the aborted takeoff was unrelated to the later problem with the left engine failure.

Title: FOLLOWING A REJECTED TKOF DUE TO A SURGE OF THE R ENG; PA31 SUFFERS COMPLETE L ENG FAILURE SHORTLY AFTER SUBSEQUENT TKOF.

Narrative: DEPARTING RWY 8. AFTER APPLYING TKOF PWR; I REACHED WITH MY R PINKY FINGER TO ADJUST THE R PROP CTL TO SYNCHRONIZE WITH L ENG. I INADVERTENTLY REDUCED RPM ENOUGH TO CAUSE R PROP TO SURGE; WHICH THEN CAUSED THE ACFT TO YAW R OF CTRLINE DUE TO L ENG PRODUCING MORE PWR. AT THAT POINT; I MADE THE DECISION TO ABORT THE TKOF. I THEN PROCEEDED TO HIGH SPD TAXI DOWN THE REMAINDER OF RWY 8 IN ORDER TO DEPART RWY 20 SINCE THE WIND WAS LESS THAN 5 KTS OUT OF THE N. TKOF WAS NORMAL. AFTER CLBING THROUGH 6500 FT; L ENG SURGED AND LOST ALL PWR. I THEN COMPLETED MEMORY ITEMS; BACKED UP WITH THE PROPER CHKLIST; RETURNED TO LAND ON RWY 26 WITH NO FURTHER PROB. COMPANY MAINT DETERMINED L TURBOCHARGER FAILED SO SUDDEN WITH WASTE GATE CLOSED WHICH CAUSED ALL EXHAUST TO BE BLOCKED AND STOPPED ENG IMMEDIATELY. FSS AND NUMEROUS PLTS QUESTIONED WHY I CONTINUED TO DEPART AFTER AN ABORTED TKOF. HOWEVER; THE ABORTED TKOF WAS UNRELATED TO THE LATER PROB WITH THE L ENG FAILURE.
