Narrative:
I climbed a C525 to FL180 from 12000 ft swbound from okk north of ind. An E170 at 17000 ft was northbound from ind to ord. I called ZID for coordination on 2 aircraft. When I came off the line; I noticed the C525 was in conflict with the E170. The C525 mode C read 152; so I stopped the C525 at 16000 ft. The C525 respond that they were at 17000 ft climbing. I continued the climb of C525 to FL200 since the aircraft were past each other. The mode C on the C525 lagged far behind and conflict alert did not activate until after they passed. Coordination took my attention away from situation. I missed traffic for C525 initially because I was focused on potential traffic down the road.

Title: ZAU CTLR EXPERIENCED OPERROR AT 17000 FT WHEN CLBING ACFT THROUGH OCCUPIED ALT.
Narrative: I CLBED A C525 TO FL180 FROM 12000 FT SWBOUND FROM OKK N OF IND. AN E170 AT 17000 FT WAS NBOUND FROM IND TO ORD. I CALLED ZID FOR COORD ON 2 ACFT. WHEN I CAME OFF THE LINE; I NOTICED THE C525 WAS IN CONFLICT WITH THE E170. THE C525 MODE C READ 152; SO I STOPPED THE C525 AT 16000 FT. THE C525 RESPOND THAT THEY WERE AT 17000 FT CLBING. I CONTINUED THE CLB OF C525 TO FL200 SINCE THE ACFT WERE PAST EACH OTHER. THE MODE C ON THE C525 LAGGED FAR BEHIND AND CONFLICT ALERT DID NOT ACTIVATE UNTIL AFTER THEY PASSED. COORD TOOK MY ATTN AWAY FROM SITUATION. I MISSED TFC FOR C525 INITIALLY BECAUSE I WAS FOCUSED ON POTENTIAL TFC DOWN THE ROAD.
