Narrative:
I was flying an experimental airplane I had just purchased and lost navigation radio. I was distracted by searching for another airplane I was supposed to form up with. I was unfamiliar with the airplane and unaccustomed to the speed and performance. My chkout was too short and led to an uneasiness with the airplane. Not finding the other airplane and improper attention to navigation and over reliance on radios that did not work; I will never again take off relying on the other pilot's familiarity with the area. I should have done my usual laborious preflight research. In short; I did not spend enough time in preflight preparation and thinking about the possible glitches. I will never again rush a chkout and preflight planning.
