Narrative:
On walkaround of aircraft prior to flight; I did not notice that both aft overwing emergency exits steps were extended. These would normally only be out when the emergency exit was opened; but may have been inadvertently left in the open position following maintenance. Flight went as planned; and no noise; or vibration noted. Once at gate at destination; contract maintenance reported steps were down. I do not know when they were placed in that position; and may have been that way for many flts. Extenuating circumstances: the steps are painted white; as is the aircraft fuselage; and the area behind the panels is white also. In addition; catering trucks and cargo loading all in place during the walkaround. In the future; I will pay much more attention to this area; as in these economic bad times; much maintenance is being outsourced; and rumors of shoddy work abound. I must be aggressive in looking for just such things.
