Narrative:

Encountered severe turbulence while on radar vector from center to avoid thunderstorms at FL290 aircraft position was over 30 mi from cell when encountering uncontrollable updraft which caused autoplt to disconnect and altitude to increase 250-300 ft. Before able to arrest climb at precisely the same time; we got a TCAS 'traffic' advisory due to another aircraft directly above us at FL300. Experienced several updrafts and downdrafts during the 15-20 second event. Reported event to center. Had the aircraft inspected for damage at destination. None found. Rvsm: 1000 ft vertical clearance may not be enough when operating near thunderstorms where severe turbulence such as this might be encountered.

Title: DC10 FLT CREW ENCOUNTERS SEVERE TURB WHILE AT FL290 IN CRUISE; ACFT DEVIATES FROM ALT; TCAS TA RECEIVED.

Narrative: ENCOUNTERED SEVERE TURB WHILE ON RADAR VECTOR FROM CTR TO AVOID TSTMS AT FL290 ACFT POS WAS OVER 30 MI FROM CELL WHEN ENCOUNTERING UNCTLABLE UPDRAFT WHICH CAUSED AUTOPLT TO DISCONNECT AND ALT TO INCREASE 250-300 FT. BEFORE ABLE TO ARREST CLB AT PRECISELY THE SAME TIME; WE GOT A TCAS 'TFC' ADVISORY DUE TO ANOTHER ACFT DIRECTLY ABOVE US AT FL300. EXPERIENCED SEVERAL UPDRAFTS AND DOWNDRAFTS DURING THE 15-20 SECOND EVENT. RPTED EVENT TO CTR. HAD THE ACFT INSPECTED FOR DAMAGE AT DEST. NONE FOUND. RVSM: 1000 FT VERT CLRNC MAY NOT BE ENOUGH WHEN OPERATING NEAR TSTMS WHERE SEVERE TURB SUCH AS THIS MIGHT BE ENCOUNTERED.
