Narrative:

On approach when selecting flaps 1; we received a te flaps disagree EICAS message and te flaps light. First officer was flying and I referenced the QRH. While performing alternate flap extension to 5 in accordance with the QRH; the aircraft shuddered and the first officer indicated that the flight controls felt sluggish. Since it seemed we might have more that just a trailing edge asymmetry; I opted to stop the QRH at that point; ie; not continue extending flaps alternately to 20. We declared a emergency with tower and landed uneventfully with flaps 5. After landing we got master warning and master caution lights along with an autoplt disconnect message. Pressing the autoplt disconnect button on the yoke cleared that message. Following rollout; we cancelled the emergency with tower as we cleared the runway. Taxied to parking and wrote up the facts.
