Narrative:

Aircraft had an inbound PIREP for problems retrieving ATIS reports on ACARS. I checked ACARS and found no problems with ACARS retrieving and printing ATIS reports. I signed off the PIREP. Later; I found that ACARS cmu core and software part numbers were incorrect per ipc. I placarded the ACARS inoperative per MEL until the newer software can be loaded. Not paying close enough attention to the applicability of software part numbers per the ipc. Not enough system knowledge of the ACARS system and how it interacts with the FMC.
