Narrative:
Cleared for takeoff dpa. Controller instructed turn right 240 degrees 'cleared for takeoff.' I performed the takeoff and proceeded to climb runway heading. Tower handed off to departure and I held runway heading. Departure told us to expedite the climb to 4000 ft (initial cleared altitude) as we passed 3700 ft. I complied. Next; we were told to turn 240 degrees (I complied). Then we were told to turn 270 degrees (I complied). We proceeded without further incident. Later we were given a number to call. I called and was informed that I was given 240 degrees at takeoff clearance and read it back; then failed to turn causing our aircraft to pass within 2 mi horizontally and 700 ft vertically of a climbing C172. Discovered problem when we called the TRACON after landing.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: EMB120 FLT CREW HAS A LOSS OF SEPARATION DEPARTING DPA.
Narrative: CLRED FOR TKOF DPA. CTLR INSTRUCTED TURN R 240 DEGS 'CLRED FOR TKOF.' I PERFORMED THE TKOF AND PROCEEDED TO CLB RWY HDG. TWR HANDED OFF TO DEP AND I HELD RWY HDG. DEP TOLD US TO EXPEDITE THE CLB TO 4000 FT (INITIAL CLRED ALT) AS WE PASSED 3700 FT. I COMPLIED. NEXT; WE WERE TOLD TO TURN 240 DEGS (I COMPLIED). THEN WE WERE TOLD TO TURN 270 DEGS (I COMPLIED). WE PROCEEDED WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. LATER WE WERE GIVEN A NUMBER TO CALL. I CALLED AND WAS INFORMED THAT I WAS GIVEN 240 DEGS AT TKOF CLRNC AND READ IT BACK; THEN FAILED TO TURN CAUSING OUR ACFT TO PASS WITHIN 2 MI HORIZLY AND 700 FT VERTICALLY OF A CLBING C172. DISCOVERED PROB WHEN WE CALLED THE TRACON AFTER LNDG.
