Narrative:

We departed runway 25 at ZZZ flaps 2 degree flex. Acceleration was normal throughout takeoff roll. Climbing through about 1500 ft AGL and raising flaps from position 1 degree to up we heard and felt a very loud bang on the left side of the aircraft. All engine and flight instruments were normal; although there may have been some residual vibration. We then saw the ECAM message 'stall engine #1.' there were no action items to accomplish and engine readings were normal with no further vibrations or noise. We elected to return to ZZZ and declared an emergency. The first flight attendant; ATC; dispatch; and the passenger were told that we were returning to the airport as a precaution and that we expected a normal approach and landing. We ran the normal checklists and made an uneventful landing on runway 16R. Taxi in and parking were also normal. Upon debriefing the passenger we ascertained that flames had been seen coming out of both the front and back of the #1 engine coinciding with the noise 'bang' that was heard throughout the cabin; and that it was a single event.

Narrative: WE DEPARTED RWY 25 AT ZZZ FLAPS 2 DEG FLEX. ACCELERATION WAS NORMAL THROUGHOUT TKOF ROLL. CLBING THROUGH ABOUT 1500 FT AGL AND RAISING FLAPS FROM POS 1 DEG TO UP WE HEARD AND FELT A VERY LOUD BANG ON THE L SIDE OF THE ACFT.
