Narrative:

We were assigned the deauville 4W arrival to lfpg with a speed and altitude restr at merue. Between the radio frequency issue and strong accent of the controller; it was our understanding that after merue we were cleared direct cgn; and the FMS was programmed as such. However; when we proceeded direct to cgn; ATC queried us as to why we were off track. I responded with the clearance we understood was correct; but he gave us a heading direct to crl and advised us we were off course. The french controllers were extremely difficult to understand; but we should have requested clarification on the routing when we were given the STAR. There were no traffic conflicts.
