Narrative:
On rollout for takeoff we were gaining speed and there was a loud; quick pop; pop; pop the aircraft shuddered a little and we slowed down and stopped. The captain made an announcement that we would be going back to gate for maintenance and he thought it might be a brake locking up. After gate arrival passenger sitting in main cabin abc side behind engine came to aft galley and told 3 crew that during the pop; pop; pop each time black smoke came out of the engine. We told cockpit; aircraft taken out of service. This aircraft had just spent 3 days at the hangar prior to flight before ours. I was glad for it to go OTS.
