Narrative:
We were doing a repositioning flight to dvt. We were cleared for the visual approach by phx approach and turned over to deer valley tower. I had briefed the airport; noting only RNAV approachs and told my copilot since it was VMC; we would fly a visual -- described the pattern and terrain on final and would use a pvor in the FMS. I briefed runway 25L noting runway 25R was shorter. Our reference speed on landing is 120 KTS. We were on short final when tower came on and asked if we were lined up on runway 25R. Said we were cleared for runway 25R; not runway 25L. I initiated a go around. There was no one on the runway; no one cleared to enter or take off from the left. I would not have accepted runway 25R given the availability of a much longer runway. Neither I nor my copilot heard any mention of runway 25R. While we are a turboprop; our high reference speed and no anti-skid mean we use a lot of runway. Often controllers unfamiliar with our aircraft confuse us with a pilatus or worse; a piper single engine.

Title: A P180 ON VISUAL APCH TO DVT WAS ADVISED BY TWR THEY WERE LINED UP WITH THE WRONG RWY.
Narrative: WE WERE DOING A REPOSITIONING FLT TO DVT. WE WERE CLRED FOR THE VISUAL APCH BY PHX APCH AND TURNED OVER TO DEER VALLEY TWR. I HAD BRIEFED THE ARPT; NOTING ONLY RNAV APCHS AND TOLD MY COPLT SINCE IT WAS VMC; WE WOULD FLY A VISUAL -- DESCRIBED THE PATTERN AND TERRAIN ON FINAL AND WOULD USE A PVOR IN THE FMS. I BRIEFED RWY 25L NOTING RWY 25R WAS SHORTER. OUR REF SPD ON LNDG IS 120 KTS. WE WERE ON SHORT FINAL WHEN TWR CAME ON AND ASKED IF WE WERE LINED UP ON RWY 25R. SAID WE WERE CLRED FOR RWY 25R; NOT RWY 25L. I INITIATED A GAR. THERE WAS NO ONE ON THE RWY; NO ONE CLRED TO ENTER OR TAKE OFF FROM THE L. I WOULD NOT HAVE ACCEPTED RWY 25R GIVEN THE AVAILABILITY OF A MUCH LONGER RWY. NEITHER I NOR MY COPLT HEARD ANY MENTION OF RWY 25R. WHILE WE ARE A TURBOPROP; OUR HIGH REF SPD AND NO ANTI-SKID MEAN WE USE A LOT OF RWY. OFTEN CTLRS UNFAMILIAR WITH OUR ACFT CONFUSE US WITH A PILATUS OR WORSE; A PIPER SINGLE ENG.
